Retaking Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has a bad reputation. I understand…really I do.  Every holiday in America has become almost unrecognizable due to commercialism.

And then there’s the whole exclusion issue…those who are not in some sort of relationship (whether it be a six year old giving a paper Valentine to a classmate in the school yard or an eighty year old rocking after dinner on the porch with her husband) feel left out.

Honestly though, I really don’t see a problem with Valentine’s Day…as long as one opens one’s mind and simply re-thinks it a bit.  What in the world could be better than a day focusing on love?  What human being is not improved by love?

And no—I am not talking about “romantic love” though that is certainly part of the equation.  I am talking about love in general.

Love of Self… “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.”~~~ Oscar Wilde-19th century Irish writer and poet.

Love of Family… “In family life, love is the oil that eases friction, the cement that binds closer together, and the music that brings harmony.”~~~ Eva Burrows-13th General of the Salvation Army.

Love of Friends…  A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature.”~~~ Ralph Waldo EmersonAmerican lecturer, essayist, and poet.

Love of Animals… “The human spirit is not dead.  It lives on in secret…. It has come to believe that compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind.”~~~ Albert SchweitzerFranco-German theologian, organist, philosopher, physician, and medical missionary in his 1952 Novel Peace Prize address, “The Problem of Peace in the World Today”

Love of Country… Men love their country, not because it is great, but because it is their own.”~~~ Seneca-1st century Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman,  and dramatist.

Love of Mother Nature…Man’s heart away from nature becomes hard.”~~~ Standing BearPonca Native American chief.

So let’s all Retake Valentine’s Day today.  Let’s make it the holiday it should be.  Let’s open our hearts and let the love out rather than simply frown upon another “greeting card” holiday.  Show Hallmark that we know what “true love” really is…

True Love… “We are all born for love.  It is the principle of existence and its only end.”~~~  Benjamin Disraeli -British Prime Minister, parliamentarian, Conservative statesman and literary figure.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

Great post! I agree–we can change our perception and re-frame the holiday. We don’t have to follow a cookie-cutter practice.

  2. Thank you for writing this! A great remainder that love is bigger than romance.

A well-done meander, Melissa! You bring up great points throughout.

I tend to avoid the commercial aspect, but I must admit, it is nice to have an excuse to give people things and make them happy without them feeling awkward. But I also like to give people stuff for no reason. Meh, odd duck.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! Remember that, no matter what, YOU ARE LOVED!

LOVED this and totally agree! I loved Valentine’s Day, even when I was single. It doesn’t have to be about the romance… It can still be a special day!

You are so right. It is about love, and I hope that those that are in romantic love don’t save all the attention for one day a year.

  8. Amen! I’m a single gal who happens to love Valentines Day. Love doesn’t *just* apply to two people in love.

Thank you for this post! 😀

  9. I love your flowers, and the view from your window is much better than mine; I see rainy England and a petrol (gas) station. Joy!! Hope you had a great anti valentines day
